IFK Göteborg unveil season-long kit concept celebrating city neighbourhoods

Gothenburg: IFK Göteborg have announced an innovative kit launch for the 2026 season, with the club set to unveil 15 unique match shirts — one for each home fixture — in a tribute to the Swedish city of Gothenburg.

Departing from the traditional single-kit release, each shirt will be dedicated to a different neighbourhood, highlighting the communities that have shaped the club’s identity over more than a century. The initiative will run throughout the season, with the full collection only completed after the final home match.

In a notable move, the club’s main sponsor has stepped aside from front-of-shirt prominence to allow each neighbourhood to take centre stage. The project has been supported by Ola Serneke, whose backing has enabled the concept to come to life.

“It’s a bold initiative to produce 15 unique match shirts through a launch that spans the entire season,” said Gustaf Rönneklev, Head of Merchandising at IFK Göteborg. “Thanks to this collaboration, we have created a collection that reflects the city and will become an important part of the club’s history.”

All shirts share a unified design concept, incorporating Gothenburg’s street grid into the fabric, alongside the blue and white colours derived from the city’s coat of arms — a visual identity closely linked to the club for over 120 years. Typography also plays a key role, with the primary “Göteborg” shirt drawing inspiration from one of the city’s oldest maps, while the remaining designs reflect the character of individual districts.

Serneke said the initiative aligns with the company’s long-standing connection to the city. “We have built for the people of Gothenburg for many years, just as IFK Göteborg has been part of the community across the city. It is a matter of pride to give space to these neighbourhoods through the match shirts,” he noted.

The “Göteborg” shirt will be available throughout the season both in stores and online, while the remaining 14 designs will be released in limited editions ahead of each home match. Fans will also be able to purchase the shirts through pop-up outlets in the featured neighbourhoods, in addition to the club’s official online store.
