Doha: The President of World Athletics Sebastian Coe has praised Qatar for its significant contributions to the advancement of sports on both technical and administrative fronts, both locally and internationally, facilitated by its professionals in key global positions and leadership roles within continental federations.
During the Asian Athletics Association Board of Directors meetings held in Doha, Coe expressed his admiration for Qatar’s ambitious strategy in hosting both global and regional championships. He described this as a point of pride, particularly noting the successful organization of the 2019 World Athletics Championships, which adhered to the highest standards and met the expectations of Olympic champions.
Coe highlighted Qatar’s capability and resources to host the Olympic Games, attributing this to its extensive experience in managing world-class events and its forward-looking vision for sports development.
He also commended the leadership of Dahlan Jumaan Al Hamad, President of the Asian Athletics Association, under whose guidance Asian athletics has achieved historic milestones. Coe remarked on the outstanding performances of Asian athletes at the Paris 2024 Olympics, the rise in Asian medal counts at the World Athletics Championships, and the successes at youth and junior world championships in Peru and other recent events.
Coe asserted that Asia is on the verge of becoming a dominant force in athletics, bolstered by research, statistics, and initiatives led by the President of the Asian Athletics Association. He noted that Asia is set to host the World Athletics Championships in Japan in 2025 and in China in 2027, along with numerous other international events, showcasing the continent’s impressive progress and dedication to the sport.
