MotoGP champion Martin to miss season opener

Reigning MotoGP champion Jorge Martin must have hand surgery for the second time in less than a month.

The 27-year-old Spaniard suffered a broken right hand in a crash on day one of pre-season testing in Malaysia earlier this month.

The Aprilia rider will now have surgery on his left hand after suffering fractures in a training crash before Sunday’s season opener in Thailand.

Martin will have an operation in Barcelona on Tuesday and will miss the season-opening Grand Prix of Thailand, with his recovery time to be determined after surgery.

Aprilia have confirmed that Italy’s Lorenzo Savadori will replace Martin in Sunday’s race.

The second race of the season is in Argentina on 16 March.
