Isco helps Real Betis beat Real Madrid

Real Betis came from behind to defeat Real Madrid 2-1, with Isco scoring the winning goal against his former club.

Madrid, who are currently second in La Liga, took the lead early when Kylian Mbappé delivered a perfect pass to Ferland Mendy, who squared the ball for Brahim Díaz to tap into an empty net from close range.

The visitors had a few chances to extend their lead, but it was Betis who responded in the 34th minute, with Johnny Cardoso heading home from an Isco corner to level the score.

Isco, captaining Betis against the club where he spent nine years, then put his side ahead in the 54th minute, converting a penalty after Antonio Rüdiger fouled Jesús Rodríguez in the box.

Betis almost added a third when Cucho Hernández shot wide after being set up by Antony, who had returned to action following a successful appeal against his red card the previous week.

Managed by former Madrid and Manchester City coach Manuel Pellegrini, Betis moved up to sixth in the La Liga standings, fully deserving the victory after registering 18 shots compared to Madrid’s nine.

For Carlo Ancelotti’s side, it was their fourth La Liga loss of the season, keeping them behind Barcelona on goal difference. Atlético Madrid could leapfrog them with a win over Athletic Bilbao later on Saturday (20:00 GMT).

Isco, once again, demonstrated his knack for scoring against his old club.
