Rooney calls Amorim ‘naive’ for saying Man Utd want Premier League title

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has responded to criticism from former captain Wayne Rooney, who labeled him “naive” for suggesting the club’s goal is to win the Premier League.

Amorim’s comments came after United’s 10th defeat in 24 games under his tenure, a penalty shootout loss to Fulham in the FA Cup fifth round.

Despite the setback, Amorim reiterated his ambition to win the Premier League, a goal that has eluded the club since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.

Rooney, working as a pundit for Match of the Day, questioned Amorim’s focus on long-term goals, suggesting that the Portuguese coach should prioritize short-term aims to secure his job.

However, Amorim defended his stance, stating that winning the Premier League is the club’s ultimate objective.

“To be naive is to think we are going to do it this season or be the best contender next season,” Amorim said. “I know in this moment, everybody knows everything. I was a pundit when I finished my [playing] career. I know it’s really easy.”

Amorim’s response highlighted the difference between being a pundit and a manager, emphasizing that his experience and expertise qualify him to lead Manchester United.

The 40-year-old coach remains committed to his vision for the club, despite the challenges and criticism he faces.
