Merino gives Arsenal win over Chelsea

Mikel Merino’s 20th-minute strike proved to be the difference as Arsenal secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium.

The victory moves Arsenal 12 points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool, who are not in league action this weekend due to their Carabao Cup final commitment.

Both teams were without their first-choice strikers, with Kai Havertz ruled out for the season with a hamstring injury for Arsenal and Nicolas Jackson missing for Chelsea. The Blues were also without their influential midfielder Cole Palmer, who was sidelined with an injury.

Arsenal dominated the early proceedings, with Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Martinelli, and Declan Rice all going close. Merino’s winner came courtesy of a clever flick from a Martin Odegaard corner.

Chelsea’s best chance fell to Marc Cucurella, whose powerful effort slipped through David Raya’s hands but rolled just past the post.

The win highlights Arsenal’s set-piece prowess, with Merino’s goal their 11th from corners this season. The Gunners’ organization and defensive solidity were also on full display, with Myles Lewis-Skelly impressing on his return to the starting lineup.

Chelsea, meanwhile, struggled without Palmer’s creativity and threat. The 22-year-old has been instrumental in Chelsea’s attacking play, scoring or assisting 20 of their 53 Premier League goals this season.

The Blues’ winless streak away from home now stands at seven games, with four consecutive defeats on the road.
