Spain beat Netherlands on penalties after thrilling draw

Spain secured a place in the Nations League semi-finals with a dramatic penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands after an electrifying 3-3 draw.

Dutch forward Noa Lang and Spain’s Lamine Yamal both failed to convert their penalties before Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simón denied Donyell Malen, handing Pedri the chance to seal Spain’s spot in the last four. The Barcelona midfielder delivered with a composed lofted finish into the corner, sparking wild celebrations at the Mestalla Stadium in Valencia.

Spain twice took the lead in normal time through Real Sociedad striker Mikel Oyarzabal, but Memphis Depay’s penalty early in the second half and a debut goal from Ian Maatsen forced extra time.

Yamal restored Spain’s advantage with a stunning strike 13 minutes into the additional period, only for Xavi Simons to convert another penalty and send the match to a shootout.

The victory extends Spain’s unbeaten streak in all competitions to 18 matches, while they remain undefeated in the Nations League since a 2-1 home loss to Switzerland in September 2022.
