Lewandowski scores twice as Barca reopen gap at top

Robert Lewandowski struck twice as Barcelona secured a commanding victory over Girona, restoring their three-point lead at the top of La Liga at the Olympic Stadium.

An own goal from Ladislav Krejci handed the hosts a well-earned first-half advantage, but Girona briefly threatened an upset when Arnaut Danjuma equalized against the run of play early in the second half.

However, Poland striker Lewandowski restored Barcelona’s lead just after the hour mark with a clever finish before netting his 25th league goal of the season, capitalizing on excellent midfield play from substitute Frenkie de Jong.

Ferran Torres sealed the win late on with a precise low strike into the bottom corner.

It was an ideal response from Barcelona after watching rivals Real Madrid stage a comeback win over Leganes to temporarily draw level on points at the summit of La Liga.

With nine consecutive league victories, Hansi Flick’s side now heads into Wednesday’s Copa del Rey semi-final second leg against Atletico Madrid—level at 4-4—brimming with confidence.
