Cunha clarifies comments, reaffirms commitment to Wolves

Matheus Cunha has emphasized his commitment to Wolverhampton Wanderers, stating his recent remarks about his future were misinterpreted.

The Brazilian striker insists his ambition is to take Wolves to “another level” rather than signaling an intention to leave.

In an interview with The Observer, Cunha mentioned his desire to “take the next step” and compete for titles.

His comments sparked speculation about his future, particularly given the £62.5 million release clause in the four-and-a-half-year contract he signed in February.

However, in a social media video on Monday, the 25-year-old clarified his stance, expressing frustration over how his words were perceived.

“It’s impossible for a player to be honest in an interview without knowing things can be taken out of context,” Cunha said. “I don’t think many people read the full interview or interpreted it correctly. The point was to talk about Wolves—to show how happy I am here, to play for this team and my teammates, and to give back the love I receive.”

Cunha reiterated his ambition to help Wolves progress. “Ambitious players always want more. We want to elevate this club, and my teammates and I will give everything to achieve that goal.”

Pereira: “Cunha is Committed”

Wolves, currently 17th in the Premier League and nine points clear of the relegation zone, face West Ham on Tuesday. Speaking ahead of the match, head coach Vítor Pereira dismissed concerns over Cunha’s immediate future.

“He is committed. That’s the present. The future? I don’t know,” Pereira said. “He knows his potential. He’s a top player, and naturally, he has the ambition to fight for titles—like many others. But right now, the priority is commitment and helping the team reach its goals. We’ll see what happens at the end of the season.”

Cunha has been a key player for Wolves, scoring 15 goals this season. He also found the net for Brazil in their 4-1 World Cup qualifying defeat to Argentina last week, a result that led to Dorival Júnior’s dismissal as head coach.

Currently serving a four-game suspension for his red card against Bournemouth in the FA Cup, Cunha will miss Wolves’ upcoming matches against West Ham and Ipswich but will be available for their clash with Tottenham on April 13.

Pereira concluded: “The focus is on the next game. Matheus is part of this team, even if not for this match, but my focus is always on the team.”
