Barcelona’s Olmo cleared to play for rest of season

Dani Olmo and Pau Victor have been cleared to play for Barcelona for the remainder of the season, following a ruling by Spain’s National Sports Council (CSD).

La Liga had initially granted Barcelona temporary licenses to register Olmo and Victor last summer. However, their registrations were later revoked after the league claimed the club failed to demonstrate compliance with financial regulations by the December 31 deadline.

In January, the CSD allowed Barcelona to reinstate the players temporarily after the club filed an appeal.

On Wednesday, La Liga reiterated that Barcelona lacks the financial capacity to officially register the forwards. However, the CSD overruled the agreement between La Liga and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), stating that the players’ registrations remain valid.

The RFEF acknowledged that “no federation resolution was made to cancel the licenses,” rendering its initial decision to deny registration “null and void.”

La Liga has announced plans to appeal the ruling. Meanwhile, Barcelona had previously arranged a deal on January 3 to sell VIP boxes at the Nou Camp—currently under renovation—to raise €100 million (£83m) in an effort to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations and maintain the players’ registrations.

However, La Liga argued that the revenue from this deal was not reflected in the financial records submitted by Barcelona last week and that the deal had been approved by an unnamed auditor.

Olmo, who previously trained in Barcelona’s academy before moving to Dinamo Zagreb and RB Leipzig, rejoined the club last summer in a £52m deal. He has made 28 appearances this season, including 13 since the CSD’s ruling.

Victor, another La Masia graduate, has featured 22 times this term, with five of those appearances coming after the decision.
