Cristiano Ronaldo has paid heartfelt tribute to the man who first recognized his talent, following the passing of legendary coach Aurélio da Silva Pereira on Tuesday. Pereira, 77, was a pivotal figure in Portuguese football, credited with discovering and nurturing some of the nation’s most iconic players.
As the founder of Sporting Lisbon’s recruitment and training department in 1988, Pereira played a central role in the early careers of Ronaldo, Luís Figo, Nani, Ricardo Quaresma, and many others who went on to achieve international stardom.
“One of the greatest figures in world football development has left us, but his legacy will remain forever,” Ronaldo wrote on social media. “I will always be grateful for everything he did for me and so many others. Until forever, Mr. Aurélio. Thank you for everything. Rest in peace.”
Pereira’s influence was instrumental in Portugal’s historic Euro 2016 triumph, with 10 members of the winning squad having been discovered under his guidance—a group affectionately dubbed the “Aurélios.”
His lifelong contributions were formally recognized with several honors, including the Medal of Sporting Merit from the City of Lisbon in 2017 and UEFA’s Order of Merit in 2018, acknowledging his impact on both Portuguese and European football.
The Portuguese Football Federation described his death as “an irreparable loss,” adding: “Beyond the remarkable legacy of discovering some of the greatest players in our history, Aurélio Pereira will be remembered as a kind soul, a gentleman, and a tireless advocate for Portuguese talent.”
Sporting CP, where Pereira spent much of his career both as a player and a coach, honored his memory by naming the club academy’s main pitch after him. “He was a master of his craft and universally respected,” the club said. “He will forever hold a place among the giants of Portuguese football and in the heart of Sporting Clube de Portugal.”
Nani also shared a personal tribute, writing: “Thank you for everything. You were a great friend and an exceptional human being who gave me invaluable advice. I’ll never forget all that I learned from you, my friend.”
Aurélio Pereira’s legacy lives on not only in the trophies and accolades of those he mentored, but in the values and vision he instilled in Portuguese football.
