Wissa strike clinches Brentford draw at Arsenal

Brentford earned a hard-fought point against Arsenal in a drab Premier League match at the Emirates Stadium, leaving the Gunners 10 points behind leaders Liverpool.

Mikel Arteta’s side made a slow start, with Kristoffer Ajer registering the game’s first effort on target in the 20th minute.

Arsenal thought they had taken the lead when Kieran Tierney headed in Ethan Nwaneri’s cross, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR check.

The hosts created more chances in the second half, with Thomas Partey scoring the opener in the 61st minute after excellent work from Declan Rice.

However, Brentford equalised 13 minutes later when Yoane Wissa cleverly hooked home Nathan Collins’ headed cross.

The draw leaves Arsenal second in the table, with Liverpool’s match against West Ham on Sunday potentially widening the gap to 13 points.

The Gunners will now focus on their Champions League second leg against Real Madrid on Wednesday.

MATCH STATS

– Goals: Thomas Partey (61′), Yoane Wissa (74′)
– Possession: Arsenal 63% – Brentford 37%
– Shots on target: Arsenal 3 – Brentford 2

The result extends Arsenal’s unbeaten run but raises questions about their ability to keep pace with Liverpool at the top of the table.
