McIlroy makes history with Masters win

Rory McIlroy achieved golfing immortality by winning the Masters title in a sudden-death playoff against Justin Rose, completing the career Grand Slam.

After missing a par putt to win in regulation, McIlroy sank a three-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to claim his first Masters title.

The emotional victory marked a momentous occasion for the Northern Irish golfer, who had come close to winning the title several times before.

McIlroy becomes the sixth golfer to achieve the career Grand Slam and the first European to do so, joining an elite group of golfers including Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and Gary Player.

The win caps a remarkable journey for McIlroy, who had previously won the US Open, The Open, and two US PGA Championships.

“A lot of pent-up emotion came out on the 18th green,” McIlroy said, overcome with emotion. “A moment like that makes all the years and all the close calls worth it.”

McIlroy dedicated his win to his parents, saying, “I want to say hello to mum and dad back in Northern Ireland. I’m looking forward to celebrating with them.”

The victory marks a triumphant moment in McIlroy’s career, cementing his place among golf’s all-time greats.
