Manchester United eye Wolves forward Cunha for summer move

Matheus Cunha joined Wolves from Atletico Madrid in 2023

Manchester United are interested in signing Wolves forward Matheus Cunha as part of their attacking overhaul this summer.

The Brazilian, who has a £62.5 million release clause in his contract, is widely expected to leave Molineux at the end of the season.

Sources at United have confirmed to BBC Sport that the 25-year-old is among several forward options being considered, with Ipswich Town’s 22-year-old striker Liam Delap also featuring on the club’s shortlist.

Improving United’s underwhelming goal tally is a key priority for head coach Ruben Amorim. United have scored just 38 goals in 33 Premier League matches this season — only Southampton, Leicester City, Ipswich, Everton, and West Ham have found the net fewer times.

Cunha is seen as a strong fit for Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 system, slotting into one of the two advanced midfield roles. He currently operates in a similar setup at Wolves under manager Vitor Pereira and has been the club’s standout performer this season, netting 16 goals across all competitions.

However, United are not alone in their pursuit of the former Atletico Madrid striker. Premier League rivals Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Newcastle are all understood to be in the market for a forward, setting the stage for stiff competition this summer.

While Cunha has been prolific, scoring 32 goals in 87 appearances for Wolves, his disciplinary record may raise concerns for potential suitors. The Brazilian has been sent off twice this season, resulting in a six-match suspension.

Speaking to the Observer in March, Cunha hinted at his ambition to move on, admitting he has informed Wolves of his desire to “take the next step” and compete for major honours.

Meanwhile, United’s transfer planning is complicated by financial uncertainty. Success in the Europa League could boost their summer budget by an estimated £100 million through Champions League qualification, but their current 14th-place position in the league could cost them up to £24 million in lost prize money compared to last season’s eighth-place finish.

Following United’s recent home defeat to Wolves, Amorim acknowledged the need for reinforcements but confirmed that significant squad changes would not be addressed until the summer.
