Bayern beat Mainz but must wait for Bundesliga title

Bayern Munich moved to within one win of reclaiming the Bundesliga title with a comfortable home victory over Mainz.

Leroy Sané opened the scoring for Vincent Kompany’s side, slotting into the bottom corner from close range. Michael Olise then doubled Bayern’s lead before halftime, cutting inside and drilling a low shot past Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner.

England international Eric Dier sealed the win late on, heading in from an Olise corner to cap a dominant performance.

Bayern could have secured the title on Saturday if Bayer Leverkusen had dropped points, but Xabi Alonso’s team kept the pressure on with a 2-0 win over Augsburg, maintaining the eight-point gap at the top.

Before Leverkusen’s unexpected triumph last season, Bayern had claimed 11 consecutive Bundesliga titles.

Mainz had a brief chance to pull one back when Nadiem Amiri curled an effort toward the top corner, but Bayern keeper Jonas Urbig produced a fine save to preserve the clean sheet.

The scoreline could have been even more emphatic. Sané narrowly missed the far post with a bending effort and later clipped the woodwork with a delicate chip over the onrushing Zentner, as Bayern dominated proceedings.

Thomas Müller also made a special appearance, coming on in the final minutes for his 500th Bundesliga match — a milestone that comes ahead of his planned departure from the club this summer.

Victory for Bayern away at RB Leipzig next Saturday (14:30 BST) would secure their 33rd Bundesliga title, regardless of Leverkusen’s result.
