Brentford kept their European hopes alive with a thrilling 4-3 comeback win over Manchester United in a pulsating encounter at the Gtech Community Stadium.
United looked to be in control when Mason Mount opened the scoring with just his second goal for the club, slotting home from an Alejandro Garnacho cross.
But Brentford responded with determination. Captain Mikkel Damsgaard saw his cross deflect off Luke Shaw and into the net to level the match, before Kevin Schade powered home a towering header just six minutes later to give the hosts the lead — a goal that sparked controversy as United were upset that play wasn’t stopped after Matthijs de Ligt went down injured in the build-up.
Schade added his second midway through the second half, nodding in from close range after a pinpoint cross by Bryan Mbeumo to make it 3-1.
Moments later, Brentford tore through United’s backline again, with Michael Kayode setting up Yoane Wissa for a clinical fourth.
Garnacho gave United a glimmer of hope with a stunning long-range strike eight minutes from time, and the pressure mounted when Amad Diallo netted in the fifth of seven added minutes to make it 4-3.
However, Brentford held firm in the dying moments to seal a memorable win that lifts them to ninth in the Premier League table, just one point behind eighth-placed Bournemouth.
United, meanwhile, slumped to a disappointing defeat and now sit 15th with just 39 points from 35 games, as their difficult season continues.
