Chelsea took a major step toward securing Champions League football next season as Marc Cucurella’s second-half header earned a crucial 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.
Needing a win to keep control of their top-five hopes, the Blues were made to work hard by a stubborn United side, but Cucurella’s well-timed finish from Reece James’ pinpoint cross proved decisive and lifted them to fourth in the Premier League table.
Chelsea now sit ahead of Aston Villa on goal difference and hold a one-point advantage over sixth-placed Manchester City, though Pep Guardiola’s side still have a game in hand.
Despite having the Europa League final against Tottenham looming on Wednesday, United boss Ruben Amorim named a strong starting XI.
The decision almost paid off when Harry Maguire rifled in a first-half volley, only for it to be chalked off following a VAR check for offside.
Reece James struck the post with a curling shot before the break, and Chelsea thought they’d been awarded a penalty after Tyrique George was brought down by Andre Onana in the box.
However, VAR once again intervened, correctly ruling that the United keeper got a touch on the ball first.
The breakthrough finally came in the second half, when James delivered a superb cross to the far post and Cucurella rose above the defence to head past Onana, sending the home crowd into raptures.
Chelsea will now head to Nottingham Forest on the final day of the season knowing that a win will guarantee their return to Europe’s elite competition in 2025-26.
For United, another defeat – their 18th in 37 league games – leaves them languishing in 16th place, capping off a deeply disappointing Premier League campaign.
