Fernandes weighs shock move to Al-Hilal amid Manchester United uncertainty

Bruno Fernandes is seriously considering a move away from Manchester United as Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal push to sign the Portuguese star ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.

The 30-year-old’s representatives have reportedly held fresh talks with Al-Hilal in recent days, with the Saudi side prepared to offer a significant financial package that would more than double Fernandes’ current wages.

Al-Hilal are keen to secure a marquee signing as they prepare to face Real Madrid, Red Bull Salzburg, and Pachuca in the tournament’s group stage.

The potential move has been a major talking point during United’s tour of Asia, although head coach Ruben Amorim remains optimistic.

Speaking after Fernandes captained United to a 3-1 comeback win over Hong Kong, Amorim said, “The feeling I get every time I speak with him is that he wants to continue, for sure, with Manchester United. But nobody knows.”

“He’s turning down a lot of things,” Amorim added. “He needs to be in the best league in the world. Of course I talk to him, explain things, and you can sense someone’s intentions when you speak to them.”

Despite staying professional and leading by example throughout the tour, Fernandes has yet to publicly commit to staying, fueling speculation that he could be ready to move on.

United are said to be calm about the situation, knowing a potential £80 million fee could allow Amorim to reshape a squad in need of rebuilding.

Fernandes, who was named United’s Player of the Year for a joint-record fourth time earlier this month, signed a contract extension last August keeping him at the club until 2027, with the option of an additional year. He remains one of the club’s highest earners.

In a difficult season for United, Fernandes was a standout performer, finishing as the club’s top scorer with 19 goals. Many believe his contribution was essential to avoiding a disastrous campaign, though some critics, including former captain Roy Keane, have questioned his discipline and leadership, suggesting he embodies some of United’s deeper issues.

Since joining from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 for £47 million, Fernandes has made 290 appearances and scored 98 goals in all competitions. His influence on the team has been immense — but his future at Old Trafford is now far from certain.

Should he accept Al-Hilal’s offer, it would mark the end of a defining chapter at Manchester United — and a major coup for Saudi football.
