France forward Ousmane Dembele joked that national team coach Didier Deschamps might be greeted by a few bleary-eyed players following Paris Saint-Germain’s historic Champions League triumph.
PSG demolished Inter Milan 5-0 in Saturday’s final in Munich, securing their first-ever Champions League title with the largest winning margin in the competition’s showpiece match.
Several France internationals—Lucas Hernandez, Warren Zaire-Emery, Bradley Barcola, Desire Doue, and Dembele—will join the national squad at Clairefontaine on Monday to prepare for Thursday’s Nations League semi-final clash with Spain.
“We’ve made a whole nation and an entire city proud. And as they say, the party is just getting started,” Dembele laughed in an interview on French television channel M6. “Didier is going to find us in a strange state.”
For Dembele and his PSG teammates, the celebrations marked the culmination of years of disappointment and near-misses, including their narrow 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich in the 2020 final.
“It’s something exceptional,” Dembele said. “Winning a final is already special, but winning it like this, with such dominance, is even more thrilling. We’ve been through so many years of struggle. PSG truly deserved this victory.”
Celebrations erupted across Paris following the win, with fans eagerly anticipating the team’s return to the capital on Sunday. However, Dembele also called for calm, urging supporters to celebrate responsibly.
The warning comes after French police arrested more than 500 people during wild celebrations, which also saw two fatalities reported.
