Brentford have completed the signing of goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher from Liverpool as a replacement for Dutch stopper Mark Flekken, who has departed for Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen.
The deal for Republic of Ireland international Kelleher is worth an initial £12.5 million and could rise to £18 million with performance-based add-ons. Meanwhile, Flekken has been sold for a fee in the region of £8 million.
Kelleher, 26, has signed a five-year contract with Brentford, which includes an option to extend by an additional year. He leaves Liverpool after more than a decade at the club, having made 25 Premier League appearances and over 40 in cup competitions, winning multiple trophies including the Champions League, FA Cup, and two League Cups.
“I don’t think it was very difficult for me to leave,” said Kelleher. “I felt the time was right to become a number one and play every week. When I heard Brentford were interested, it was a move I was really excited about.”
Liverpool sanctioned the sale ahead of the arrival of Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will compete with Alisson Becker for the number one spot from July.
Brentford’s director of football Phil Giles praised Kelleher’s character and quality: “We had scouted him previously and knew his contract situation.
When Mark Flekken had the opportunity to move to Leverkusen, Caoimhin was our immediate target. Beyond being a top goalkeeper, everyone speaks so highly of his personality—he’ll be a great fit here.”
Flekken, 31, has signed a three-year deal with Leverkusen after just one season at Brentford, where he made 77 appearances and played a key role in helping the club finish 10th in the Premier League.
“Mark stepped in seamlessly after David Raya and did a fantastic job,” said Giles. “While we expected him to be with us for many years, his desire to move closer to home and play Champions League football made it clear a deal could benefit all parties. He leaves with our gratitude and best wishes.”
Leverkusen’s new manager Erik ten Hag, who replaced Xabi Alonso following his move to Real Madrid, sees Flekken as a key addition. Sporting director Simon Rolfes added: “Mark has the complete profile of a modern top-level goalkeeper. His physical presence and footballing ability made him one of the Premier League’s standout performers over the past two years.”
