Ruben Neves seals Nations League glory as Portugal edge Spain on penalties

Portugal claimed their second UEFA Nations League title on Sunday, edging Spain 5-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw in Munich.

Ruben Neves scored the winning spot-kick after Álvaro Morata’s miss proved costly for La Roja.

In a thrilling Iberian clash, Portugal twice came from behind to force extra time and eventually penalties, showcasing resilience and composure under pressure.

Spain struck first in the 21st minute through Martín Zubimendi, who pounced on a defensive lapse after Lamine Yamal’s chipped ball caused chaos in Portugal’s box.

But the response was swift—just five minutes later, Nuno Mendes levelled with a precise low finish following a well-weighted pass from Pedro Neto.

Mikel Oyarzabal restored Spain’s lead shortly before the break, continuing his impressive record in finals with a composed strike after a high press forced a turnover deep in Portuguese territory.

It was his third goal in an international final, having scored in the Euro 2024 final and the 2023 Nations League final as well.

Cristiano Ronaldo, largely quiet until then, brought Portugal level for a second time in the 61st minute.

After Mendes’ deflected cross looped into the air, Ronaldo muscled past Marc Cucurella and smashed home a volley—his fourth career goal against Spain.

The veteran forward was substituted late in regulation due to cramp, watching the rest from the sidelines.

Extra time belonged to Portugal, who pushed for a winner, but the game ultimately went to penalties.

Both sides were flawless with their first three attempts. Mendes confidently slotted Portugal’s fourth, then Morata’s tame effort was saved by Diogo Costa, swinging the momentum decisively.

Neves stepped up and coolly dispatched the deciding penalty, sparking wild celebrations as Portugal lifted their third major international trophy, adding to their Euro 2016 and 2019 Nations League titles.

The win marked Portugal’s first competitive victory over Spain since Euro 2004—when a teenage Ronaldo featured—and confirmed their status as the only two-time winners of the Nations League, a tournament launched in 2018.

Despite early dominance from Spain and lively performances by Yamal and Nico Williams, Portugal’s grit, experience, and clinical finishing made the difference in a historic night for the Seleção.
