Kane hits 41 as Bayern edge Flamengo in Club World Cup thriller

England captain Harry Kane scored twice to take his season tally to 41 goals as Bayern Munich beat Flamengo in a pulsating clash to book their place in the Club World Cup quarter-finals.

Flamengo came into the tie unbeaten in 11 matches but were rocked early, falling behind in the sixth minute when Erick Pulgar turned Joshua Kimmich’s corner into his own net off the far post.

Just three minutes later, Bayern doubled their lead. Dayot Upamecano robbed Giorgian de Arrascaeta deep in Flamengo territory, and Kane rifled in a low shot from the edge of the area, helped by a deflection off Leo Ortiz.

Flamengo responded through Gerson, who powered a stunning strike past Manuel Neuer 12 minutes before the break.

But Bayern reasserted control just before half-time as Leon Goretzka’s long-range effort deceived Agustin Rossi to restore the two-goal cushion.

Early in the second half, Jorginho pulled one back for Flamengo from the penalty spot after Michael Olise handled a De Arrascaeta shot.

However, Kane sealed the result with his second of the match—latching onto a Kimmich pass and finishing coolly with 18 minutes to go.

Bayern now move on to face European champions Paris Saint-Germain in Saturday’s quarter-final in Atlanta.

Key Talking Point: Kane’s Relentless Scoring Run

Harry Kane continues to shine on the global stage. The 31-year-old became the first England player to score 40 or more goals in back-to-back seasons, having finished 2023–24 with 44 goals in all competitions. Sunday’s brace brought him to 41 for the current campaign and three in the tournament so far.

Kane was one of seven changes made by new manager Vincent Kompany following a narrow 1–0 loss to Benfica. His presence made an instant impact as Bayern started with far more intensity than Flamengo, pressing high and dominating the early stages.

Player Performances

Kane was the standout figure once again, not only with his finishing but also his movement and leadership. His second goal, a composed finish from Kimmich’s through ball, extinguished any hopes of a Flamengo comeback after Jorginho’s penalty.

It was a game to forget for Erick Pulgar. The Chilean midfielder’s early own goal set the tone, and he later picked up a yellow card for a reckless challenge on Kane that left him injured and needing to be stretchered off before half-time.
