Vinicius rediscovers form as Real Madrid eye Club World Cup glory

A major reason behind Real Madrid’s trophyless end to last season was the sharp dip in form of their star winger, Vinicius Junior.

The Brazilian had been in Ballon d’Or contention during the 2023–24 campaign, as Los Blancos claimed both the Champions League and La Liga titles.

But he struggled to replicate that level in the following season, contributing to a disappointing finish that saw Madrid fall short under Carlo Ancelotti, finishing behind fierce rivals Barcelona.

Now, under new head coach Xabi Alonso, Vinicius appears to be regaining his spark just in time.

The 24-year-old delivered a standout performance in Madrid’s 3–0 victory over Salzburg, scoring one and assisting another with a clever backheel for Fede Valverde, helping his side top Group H and avoid a dangerous Manchester City side in the next round.

“I’m very happy because Vini, like any forward, needed that goal,” Alonso said after the match.

Madrid will now face Juventus in the Club World Cup last-16 clash on Tuesday in Orlando, and Alonso could be further boosted by the return of Kylian Mbappé, who has resumed training after recovering from a stomach bug and brief hospitalization with acute gastroenteritis.

If Vinicius can maintain his revived form and Mbappé returns firing, Real Madrid may have the attacking firepower to lift the Club World Cup trophy.

Off the pitch, contract talks between Vinicius and the club are ongoing, with the Brazilian currently under contract until 2027.

“I hope I can stay here for many years. I’ve always said it’s the club of my life,” Vinicius said earlier this week. “I’m very happy with the coach and the staff, and I hope I can stay.”

Madrid’s success in this tournament—and beyond—may depend on how well Vinicius and Mbappé can function together.

The pair initially had difficulty clicking, often drifting into similar spaces on the left, but Alonso is confident they can make it work.

“They can play together—Vini from the outside, Kylian more inside,” said the Spanish coach. “It’s not one or the other. The individual talent is there, but the key is making the team work.”

Mbappé finished last season with 43 goals in all competitions, while Vinicius scored 22—respectable numbers, but far from the Brazilian’s explosive best.

If Alonso can unlock the full potential of both stars, Real Madrid will be serious contenders not just for this title, but many more to come.
