West Ham midfielder Lucas Paquetá has been cleared of spot-fixing allegations by an independent regulatory commission, nearly two years after the Football Association (FA) began its investigation.
The FA launched its inquiry in August 2023 and formally charged the Brazil international in May last year, accusing him of deliberately receiving yellow cards “for the improper purpose of affecting the betting market.” A guilty verdict could have resulted in a lifetime ban for the 27-year-old.
The four charges related to bookings received in Premier League matches against Leicester City (12 November 2022), Aston Villa (12 March 2023), Leeds United (21 May 2023) and Bournemouth (12 August 2023). However, the regulatory commission ruled all four allegations “not proven” following a full hearing.
Paquetá was also charged with two counts of failing to cooperate with the investigation under FA Rule F3, which concerns providing requested information and documentation. These breaches were found proven, and the commission will determine the appropriate sanction for them at a later date.
“From the very first day of this investigation, I have maintained my innocence against these extremely serious accusations,” said Paquetá.
“I can’t say more at this moment, but I am deeply grateful to God and excited to return to playing football with a smile on my face.
“To my wife, who never let go of my hand, to West Ham United, to the fans who always cheered me on, and to my family, friends, and legal team who stood by me – thank you for everything.”
