English defender Lloyd Kelly redeemed himself with a stoppage-time equaliser to rescue a 4-4 draw for Juventus in a chaotic second half against Borussia Dortmund in Turin.
Kelly — a summer signing from Newcastle — had conceded a penalty that allowed Dortmund to extend their lead to 4-2 late on.
But the centre-back made amends in the dying seconds, rising to head home Dusan Vlahovic’s cross in the 96th minute, just two minutes after the Serbian striker had brought Juve level with a powerful strike off the woodwork.
The match was a tale of two halves, with the first 45 minutes offering little in terms of entertainment as both sides struggled to break each other down.
However, those who stayed tuned were rewarded with a second-half explosion — all eight goals came after the 51st minute, making it only the second time in Champions League history that eight goals have been scored in one half.
The first instance came in Bayern Munich’s 9-2 demolition of Dinamo Zagreb last season.
Dortmund opened the scoring through Karim Adeyemi, who created space on the edge of the area before curling a pinpoint finish into the far corner.
Juventus responded 11 minutes later with a moment of brilliance from Kenan Yildiz. The Turkish international unleashed a stunning strike from distance that found the top corner.
But the back-and-forth was only beginning. Felix Nmecha restored Dortmund’s lead within two minutes, curling a sublime first-time shot beyond Michele Di Gregorio.
Juventus hit back immediately once again, with Vlahovic calmly slotting home after being played through one-on-one.
The German side reclaimed their advantage through Yan Couto, whose low drive beat Di Gregorio at his near post, and they appeared to have sealed the win when Ramy Bensebaini converted a penalty after Kelly was penalised for handball in the box.
However, Juventus refused to go quietly. Vlahovic’s second goal in the 94th minute gave the hosts hope, and the Allianz Stadium erupted just two minutes later when Kelly headed in the equaliser, completing a thrilling late comeback.
