Manchester United took full advantage of Robert Sanchez’s early red card to claim a vital Premier League win over Chelsea in a dramatic encounter at Old Trafford.
In torrential rain, the match became the first in Premier League history to feature two goals, two red cards, and substitutions all inside the opening half.
Bruno Fernandes struck first before Casemiro doubled United’s lead — though the Brazilian midfielder was later dismissed before half-time.
The decisive moment came just five minutes in when Chelsea goalkeeper Sanchez rushed out and brought down Bryan Mbeumo outside the box, denying a clear scoring chance.
Enzo Maresca’s side were forced into rapid changes, withdrawing Pedro Neto and Estevao Willian, while Cole Palmer limped off with a groin issue, leaving the visitors severely weakened.
Trevoh Chalobah gave Chelsea late hope with a header 10 minutes from time, but United held firm to seal only their second league win of the season.
The result, watched by minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, ended a difficult week on a high for Ruben Amorim, who was reassured about his future by the club’s hierarchy.
Chelsea, meanwhile, extended their winless run at Old Trafford to 12 years.
