Nketiah’s last-second strike ends Liverpool’s perfect start

Eddie Nketiah struck with virtually the last kick of the game to hand Crystal Palace a dramatic and deserved victory over Premier League leaders Liverpool, ending their five-match winning run.

Palace looked set to be denied after Federico Chiesa’s 87th-minute equaliser salvaged a point Liverpool’s poor display had scarcely warranted.

Ismaila Sarr had given the hosts an early lead, and though they wasted a series of chances, Nketiah pounced at the far post in the seventh minute of stoppage time to send Palace second in the table.

The Eagles were outstanding as they extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 18 matches, equalling a club record set in 1969.

They repeatedly carved open Liverpool’s shaky defence, only to be denied by goalkeeper Alisson and the woodwork.

Sarr’s scrappy ninth-minute strike, bundled in after a corner, was scant reward for a dominant first half in which Alisson produced fine saves from Yeremy Pino, Daniel Muñoz and Jean-Philippe Mateta, who also rattled the post after a sweeping move.

Liverpool improved after the break, with Dean Henderson turning Ryan Gravenberch’s powerful drive onto the post before denying Florian Wirtz at close range.

Record £125m signing Alexander Isak also wasted a clear opening on his full league debut.

When substitute Chiesa levelled late on, Liverpool appeared to have snatched another trademark escape, but Nketiah delivered the final twist, his winner standing after a VAR check confirmed Gravenberch was just onside in the build-up.
