West Ham sack Graham Potter after poor start to season

West Ham have dismissed head coach Graham Potter after just eight months in charge, with the club sitting 19th in the Premier League.

The Hammers have collected only three points from their opening five matches, prompting the board to say they “believe that a change is necessary in order to help improve the team’s position as soon as possible”.

Potter, 50, was preparing for Monday’s game against Everton and carried out media duties on Friday, but his future had been under scrutiny following last weekend’s home defeat by Crystal Palace.

Since replacing David Moyes in January, Potter won just six of his 25 games in charge as West Ham finished 14th last season.

Nuno Espirito Santo, recently sacked by Nottingham Forest, is among the early contenders to succeed him.

The club thanked Potter and his staff for their efforts, adding that the search for a replacement is already under way.
