Nigeria face Benin in pivotal World Cup qualifier with group C on the line

Nigeria and Benin are set for a decisive Group C clash in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, with both sides eyeing a place at next year’s finals in North America.

The high-stakes encounter takes place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Tuesday evening.

Form and Stakes
Benin currently top Group C, two points ahead of South Africa, after securing a dramatic 1-0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali on Friday thanks to Tosin Aiyegun’s stoppage-time winner. A victory in Uyo would seal the Cheetahs’ first-ever World Cup qualification.

However, Nigeria can turn the group on its head. A win by two or more goals would see the Super Eagles move level on points with Benin and overtake them on goal difference. If South Africa fail to beat Rwanda in their concurrent fixture, Nigeria would clinch top spot and a return to the World Cup for the first time since 2018.

The Super Eagles kept their hopes alive with a 2-1 away victory against Lesotho last Friday, courtesy of goals from William Troost-Ekong and Akor Adams.

What the Coaches Said
Nigeria coach Eric Chelle expressed pride in his team’s resilience and called on home support to make the difference:

“We’re happy because we got the three points — we’re still alive. I’m proud of my players. Nigeria must qualify for the World Cup, and we need our fans behind us to put pressure on Benin. We must finish the job on the pitch.”

Benin boss Gernot Rohr urged caution despite his side’s strong position:

“Those who think we’re already at the World Cup because we’re first should not get too excited.”

Players to Watch

  • Akor Adams (Nigeria): The Sevilla forward made an impact off the bench against Lesotho and could be handed a start. His strength and direct play could prove vital as Nigeria push for a must-win result.
  • Steve Mounié (Benin): The captain has been instrumental, scoring five goals — more than any player in Group C. Another crucial strike could cement his status as a national hero if Benin secure historic qualification.

Head-to-Head
The sides last met in June 2024, when Benin claimed a 2-1 “home” win in Abidjan, with Jodel Dossou and Mounié on target.

With everything on the line, Tuesday’s fixture promises to be one of the most defining games of the African qualifiers.
