British number two Cameron Norrie was eliminated from the Austria Open after a dramatic three-set defeat to Italy’s Matteo Berrettini in the last 16.
Berrettini, ranked 59th in the world, triumphed 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (9-11), 6-4 after a gruelling three hours and 16 minutes in Vienna.
Norrie squandered a 4-1 lead in the opening set and was edged out in the tie-break, before rallying in the second to save a match point and convert his fourth set point to force a decider.
However, the 30-year-old Briton could not maintain his momentum, as Berrettini broke serve in the ninth game of the final set to clinch victory.
The 29-year-old Italian will face third seed and world number seven Alex de Minaur next, after the Australian beat Filip Misolic 6-4 6-4.
