Luis Enrique concerned as Dembele and Hakimi injuries overshadow PSG’s Champions League defeat to Bayern

Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique says the club must wait for medical tests to determine the severity of injuries sustained by Ousmane Dembélé and Achraf Hakimi during Tuesday’s 2-1 Champions League loss to Bayern Munich at the Parc des Princes.

Ballon d’Or winner Dembélé lasted just 25 minutes before limping off, while Hakimi had to be helped from the field in tears after twisting his left ankle in first-half stoppage time. Bayern forward Luis Díaz was sent off for the challenge that led to the Moroccan’s injury.

“We’ll have to wait until tomorrow for the results of the scans to know more,” said Luis Enrique. “But Ousmane’s problem is unrelated to his previous injury.”

It was only Dembélé’s second start since returning from a hamstring issue suffered while playing for France in early September. Hakimi’s setback added to PSG’s growing list of fitness concerns in what has been a disrupted start to their title defence.

“That’s football — it’s a contact sport,” added Luis Enrique, referencing the broken leg Bayern’s Jamal Musiala suffered during the Club World Cup clash between the sides in July. “It’s unfortunate for the players, but sometimes these moments are just bad luck.”

Bayern coach Vincent Kompany also expressed sympathy, saying: “All that matters is that Hakimi recovers quickly. The intensity levels were massive, and it was an unfortunate moment — there was no intent to injure him.”

Díaz had earlier scored twice in a dominant first-half display for Bayern, who played with 10 men for the entire second half but held firm after João Neves pulled one back for PSG.

The result extended Bayern’s winning streak to 16 matches in all competitions, maintaining their perfect record in the Champions League with 12 points from four games.

“It’s a fantastic result, especially with 10 men,” said Kompany. “But I always tell my players — don’t believe the hype. When people say you’re great, you’re not that good; when you lose, you’re not that bad. We start from zero again tomorrow.”

Despite the defeat, PSG remain well placed in the group on nine points from four matches, with progress to the knockout phase still in their hands.

“In the first half they were better, they created more chances, and we gave them goals,” admitted Luis Enrique. “But the truth is, I can’t remember a single game this season where we’ve had everyone fit. It’s a different kind of season, and we have to manage it — no excuses.”
