Brobbey’s stoppage-time strike ends Arsenal’s winning run in thrilling draw at Sunderland

Brian Brobbey struck a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser as Arsenal’s long defensive record finally came to an end in a thrilling 2-2 draw against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

The newly promoted hosts rose to the occasion against an in-form Arsenal side that had won 10 straight matches in all competitions.

Their bright first-half performance was rewarded when former Arsenal academy graduate Daniel Ballard fired home the opener — the first goal the Gunners had conceded in 812 minutes of play.

Arsenal responded strongly after the break, with Declan Rice winning possession in midfield to set up Bukayo Saka, who drove a low shot inside the near post to level the score.

Martin Zubimendi rattled the crossbar as Arsenal pressed for a winner, and Leandro Trossard appeared to have sealed victory with a stunning 20-yard strike into the top corner.

But Sunderland refused to surrender. After David Raya initially denied Brobbey, the substitute made no mistake deep into stoppage time, hooking home from close range to spark wild celebrations among the home fans.

The result leaves Arsenal seven points clear at the top of the Premier League, though that gap could narrow when Manchester City host Liverpool on Sunday. Sunderland remain unbeaten at home and climb to third in the table.
