Barnes hits brace as Newcastle stun Man City in thrilling Premier League clash

Harvey Barnes scored twice to inspire Newcastle United to a memorable victory over Manchester City in a thrilling Premier League encounter at St James’ Park.

The forward opened the scoring and later tapped in the decisive goal inside the box, sparking wild celebrations from the home crowd.

City had briefly drawn level when Ruben Dias’ effort deflected off Fabian Schar after Newcastle failed to clear a corner.

But the hosts responded immediately as Jacob Murphy whipped in a cross, Bruno Guimaraes’ header struck the bar, and Barnes reacted quickest to lift the rebound into the net.

A lengthy VAR check for offside followed, but the goal stood.

The result was just the reaction Eddie Howe wanted after a bruising 3-1 defeat at Brentford before the international break, and it delivered a rare league win over Pep Guardiola’s side.

Newcastle finally found a way past Gianluigi Donnarumma, who had earlier pulled off three strong saves to deny Nick Woltemade.

City, meanwhile, will regret missing the chance to close the gap on leaders Arsenal to a single point.

The visitors were incensed that Barnes’ winner stood and were left furious earlier when a strong penalty appeal was waved away after Phil Foden went down under Schar’s challenge.

Erling Haaland spurned multiple opportunities, including a one-on-one that Nick Pope blocked and a chipped effort that drifted wide.

Foden also missed from close range after a neat exchange with Rayan Cherki.

But the night belonged to Newcastle, as Howe celebrated his first Premier League victory over Manchester City in style.
