Everton pulled off a remarkable 1-0 win at Old Trafford on Monday despite Idrissa Gueye being sent off for slapping teammate Michael Keane just 13 minutes into the match.
The Senegal international received a straight red from referee Tony Harrington after a furious exchange with Keane, leaving Everton to play almost the entire game with 10 men.
Manchester United supporters expected the incident to unleash a dominant attacking display, but the hosts failed to make their advantage count and struggled to break down David Moyes’ resilient side.
Instead, Everton struck the decisive blow in the 29th minute.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall picked up possession in United’s half, drove past Bruno Fernandes and Leny Yoro, and curled a superb finish into the top corner.
Despite firing 25 shots to Everton’s three, a depleted United – without injured forwards Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha – could not find a route back into the match.
Dewsbury-Hall later revealed that Gueye had apologised in the dressing room, describing the red card as “a moment of madness.”
Moyes, securing his first-ever win at Old Trafford as a visiting manager on his 18th attempt, praised the spirit of his players.
“We finally got over the line – and to do it with 10 men makes it even more impressive,” he said.
