Liverpool’s crisis deepens as PSV crush Reds in heavy Anfield defeat

Liverpool’s alarming slump worsened with a chastening home defeat to PSV, extending their miserable run to nine losses in 12 matches and marking their bleakest stretch since 1953.

Despite Champions League success offering temporary relief for Arne Slot — including three wins from four and a statement victory over Real Madrid — this latest setback has intensified scrutiny over the Dutchman’s struggling side.

PSV struck first after only six minutes when Virgil van Dijk’s raised arm gifted the visitors a penalty, calmly converted by Ivan Perisic.

Liverpool hit back quickly as Matej Kovár parried Cody Gakpo’s strike into the path of Dominik Szoboszlai for a straightforward equaliser.

Seeking a much-needed response, Liverpool improved, with Gakpo testing Kovár and van Dijk rattling the crossbar.

But PSV reclaimed the lead before the break through Guus Til, who finished confidently from Mauro Junior’s incisive through-ball.

The Dutch leaders then pulled away late on. Substitute Couhaib Driouech reacted quickest to poke in after Ricardo Pepi’s effort was saved, before adding a composed second in stoppage time to complete a memorable night for the visitors — their first win over an English side since defeating Tottenham in the 2008 Europa League.

Liverpool dropped to 13th in the standings and remain locked in a fierce battle for a top-eight spot. With pressure mounting and confidence in short supply, Slot faces a growing challenge to arrest his team’s dramatic slide.
