Doha Gymnastics World Cup cancelled amid regional crisis

Doha: The Artistic Gymnastics Apparatus World Cup scheduled to be held in Doha next month has been cancelled due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the sport’s governing body announced on Friday.

In a statement, International Gymnastics Federation said its executive committee had taken the decision following an urgent online vote, citing the prevailing regional situation.

“Following an urgent online vote and in light of the current situation in the Middle East, the executive committee has decided to cancel the 2026 edition of the Artistic Gymnastics Apparatus World Cup in Doha, scheduled to take place from April 15 to 18,” the statement said.

The governing body confirmed that the event will not be rescheduled.

The cancellation adds to a growing list of international sporting events affected by the ongoing crisis, as organisers continue to prioritise safety and logistical considerations.

In motorsport, the Bahrain Grand Prix and the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, both originally slated for mid-April, have also been called off.

Football has similarly been impacted, with the highly anticipated Finalissima — which was set to see European champions Spain face Copa America winners Argentina in Qatar on March 27 — cancelled.

Meanwhile, the Qatar Motorcycle Grand Prix has been postponed, with organisers rescheduling the event from April to November 8.

The wave of cancellations and postponements underscores the broader disruption to the international sporting calendar, as the region grapples with escalating tensions.

Qatar, which has hosted numerous global sporting events in recent years, continues to monitor developments while maintaining its position as a key hub for international sport.
