Sunderland 1-0 Tottenham: Spurs sink deeper into crisis as Mukiele strike seals vital win

By Ajileye Temi Kings

Sunderland piled more misery on Tottenham Hotspur with a narrow but crucial 1-0 victory at the Stadium of Light, further deepening Spurs’ relegation fears.

In what was Roberto De Zerbi’s first game in charge, Tottenham once again failed to deliver, as their season continues to spiral at the worst possible time.

The match was tightly contested in the first half, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut chances. Spurs had more of the ball but lacked sharpness in the final third, while Sunderland remained compact and disciplined defensively.

Tottenham’s best opportunity came when they thought they had won a penalty, only for VAR to overturn the decision—another moment that summed up their frustrating afternoon.

The decisive moment arrived in the second half. In the 61st minute, Nordi Mukiele cut inside and fired a low effort that took a significant deflection off a Tottenham defender, wrong-footing the goalkeeper and finding the back of the net.

That goal proved to be the difference.

Tottenham pushed forward in search of an equalizer, but their attacking play lacked cohesion and cutting edge. Despite late pressure, they struggled to truly test Sunderland’s defense, continuing a worrying trend that has defined their campaign.

Sunderland, meanwhile, defended resolutely and managed the game well in the closing stages, holding on for a vital three points that lifts them into the top half of the table.

For Spurs, the defeat is another major setback. It extends their poor run of form and leaves them stuck in the relegation zone, with time running out to turn their season around.
