Nottingham Forest 1-1 Aston Villa: Neco Williams cancels out Murillo own goal in hard-fought draw

By Ajileye Temi Kings

Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa played out a tense 1-1 draw at the City Ground, with both sides forced to settle for a point in a game that carried major implications at both ends of the table.

Aston Villa took the lead in the 22nd minute in fortunate fashion, as Murillo turned the ball into his own net while attempting to deal with a dangerous cross. The early goal gave the visitors an advantage despite a fairly even opening spell.

Forest, however, responded with determination and growing confidence. Their equalizer arrived in the 37th minute through Neco Williams, who struck a superb effort from outside the box into the bottom corner, bringing the home crowd to life.

At 1-1 heading into halftime, the match was finely balanced, with both teams showing moments of attacking promise.

The second half saw Aston Villa push harder in search of a winner, enjoying longer spells of possession and creating several opportunities. Players like Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers came close, but they were unable to convert their chances.

Nottingham Forest, meanwhile, showed resilience and defensive discipline. While they created fewer chances after the break, they remained organized and dangerous on the counterattack, holding firm under increasing pressure from Villa.

Goalkeeper Matz Sels played a key role in keeping Forest level, making important saves as Villa continued to threaten. Despite the visitors’ dominance in the latter stages, they lacked the clinical edge needed to secure all three points.

In the end, the draw reflects a game of contrasting halves—Villa more dominant after the break, but Forest deserving credit for their response and defensive effort.

The result is significant for Nottingham Forest in their battle against relegation, earning a valuable point, while Aston Villa will see it as a missed opportunity in their push for a top four finish.
