Al Rayyan end trophy drought with QSL Cup triumph

Doha: Al Rayyan SC claimed the QSL Cup for the 2025-2026 season after defeating Second Division side Muaither SC 2-0 in the final at Stadium 974 on Wednesday.

The victory marked Al Rayyan’s first silverware since lifting the Sheikh Jassim Cup in 2018 and their first under new head coach Vicente Moreno.

Goals from Roger Guedes just before halftime and Aleksandar Mitrovic early in the second half sealed the win for “The Lions,” capping a dominant run in the competition.

Muaither, who impressed throughout the tournament, started brightly and showed attacking intent in the opening stages as they sought an early breakthrough. However, they were repeatedly denied by a resolute Al Rayyan defence, with their lack of experience evident when they failed to capitalise on a clear opportunity inside the box.

Al Rayyan also found it difficult to break down Muaither’s disciplined backline for much of the first half, despite creating several chances. The breakthrough finally came in first-half stoppage time when Guedes capitalised on a well-weighted assist from Khaled Ali Binsabaa, weaving into the penalty area before calmly slotting the ball into the right corner.

The momentum carried into the second half, with Al Rayyan doubling their advantage in the 53rd minute. Mitrovic rose to meet a long free kick, directing his header into the net. Although the assistant referee initially raised the flag, the goal was awarded following a VAR review.

With a two-goal cushion, Al Rayyan managed the remainder of the match effectively, limiting Muaither’s attacking threats and maintaining control to secure a comfortable victory.

The triumph not only ended a seven-year wait for silverware but also signalled a strong start to a new era under Moreno, as Al Rayyan reaffirmed their status among Qatar’s top football clubs.
