Qatar shines at Sanya 2026 with two golds and one silver in team sports

Sanya: Qatar concluded their campaign at the Asian Beach Games Sanya 2026 with an impressive medal haul of two golds and one silver, underlining its growing strength in team sports and reaffirming its status as a major force on the Asian stage.

The standout achievements came through Qatar’s 3×3 basketball and beach volleyball teams, both of which secured gold medals, while the beach handball team added a silver after a hard-fought final. Collectively, the results reflected a well-structured preparation phase and a high level of technical and physical readiness across all squads.

In beach volleyball, the celebrated duo of Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan once again demonstrated their class by clinching gold with a commanding straight-sets victory over Iran (21-15, 21-12) in the final. Their triumph capped an unbeaten run throughout the tournament, having topped their group with wins over the Maldives, Uzbekistan, and Iran before progressing through the knockout rounds with victories against fellow Qatari competitors, China, and Thailand.

The pair, widely regarded among the world’s elite, added another milestone to a decorated career that already includes an Olympic bronze medal at Tokyo. Their continued success highlights the sustained development of beach volleyball in Qatar, a discipline that has consistently delivered strong performances at the Asian Beach Games, including podium finishes in previous editions.

President of the Qatar Volleyball Association, Ali Ghanem Al Kuwari, dedicated the victory to the leadership of Qatar, praising the long-term investment and strategic planning that have elevated the sport. He emphasized that maintaining success at this level requires continuous development, noting that the federation is focused on expanding its talent pipeline, including youth development programmes and sustained international participation.

Qatar’s dominance extended to 3×3 basketball, where the men’s national team delivered a clinical performance to secure gold. The team defeated Thailand 21-10 in the final after edging China 18-16 in a tightly contested semi-final. The tournament’s demanding format, which required multiple high-intensity matches in a single day, tested the players’ endurance and mental resilience—challenges they handled with composure and tactical discipline.

Their journey to the title included a flawless group stage campaign, with victories over Bahrain, Kazakhstan, and India, followed by a quarter-final win against Iran. The gold medal marked Qatar’s third title in the discipline at the Asian Beach Games, having previously triumphed in 2014 and 2016, reinforcing its dominance in 3×3 basketball at the continental level.

President of the Qatar Basketball Federation, Mohammed Saad Al-Mughaisib, hailed the achievement as the result of meticulous preparation and strong team cohesion. He noted that the players’ ability to perform under pressure and maintain consistency across multiple matches was key to their success.

Meanwhile, Qatar’s beach handball team added a silver medal after a closely contested final against Iran, which ended 2-1 in the opponents’ favour following a dramatic tiebreak. Despite the narrow defeat, the team’s performance throughout the tournament was exceptional. They recorded a series of victories over Pakistan, Oman, Bangladesh, Mongolia, Jordan, and Thailand to top their group, before overcoming Bahrain in the semi-finals.

The result further cements Qatar’s reputation as a powerhouse in beach handball, a sport in which it has enjoyed sustained success over the years, including multiple Asian Beach Games titles and strong showings on the global stage.

Overall, Qatar’s performance in Sanya reflected a cohesive sporting strategy built on long-term planning, athlete development, and international exposure. The results not only demonstrate the current strength of Qatari teams but also point to a promising future as the country continues to invest in building competitive squads across multiple disciplines.

With two gold medals and one silver, Qatar leaves Sanya 2026 with renewed confidence and momentum, reinforcing its position among Asia’s elite sporting nations and setting a strong foundation for upcoming regional and international competitions.
