FIFA reimagines World Cup pre-match ceremony — and every player gets their moment

By Staff Reporter
New York: FIFA has revealed a sweeping overhaul of the pre-match ceremony for the FIFA World Cup 2026, built around a simple but powerful idea: the tournament belongs to every player and every fan, not just the eleven who start.

At the heart of the new format is a 360-degree stadium concept designed to give every supporter a meaningful view of the action on the pitch, regardless of where they are seated. Oversized national flag banners, on-pitch visual elements, and carefully choreographed positioning are all calibrated to draw the crowd into the moment rather than leave them as passive observers.

The player entrance gets a redesign too. Accompanied by youth programme escorts, each squad will walk onto the pitch from the side nearest their tunnel, passing through a dedicated arch. A central banner in the centre circle, handheld flags, and prominent FIFA branding will frame the scene as the ceremony builds toward its centrepiece.

That centrepiece is a notable departure from tradition. Rather than only the starting lineup taking part, every player named in the matchday squad will gather around the centre circle for the national anthems — a deliberate gesture to ensure that substitutes and squad members share in the pride of the moment when representing their country on football’s biggest stage.

“Having all players and referees face each other in the centre circle during the national anthems will create a moment of unity, pride and emotion that truly belongs to the teams and to everyone in the stadium,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino. “The FIFA World Cup is about every player and every fan, and this new pre-match ceremony reflects that.”

The anthems give way to the familiar rhythm of pre-match ritual — handshakes, team photos of the starting lineups, and the captains’ coin toss. As the tournament progresses into its later stages, the ceremony will expand further, incorporating coloured smoke and pyrotechnics for added spectacle.

Commercial partners adidas, Coca-Cola, Kia, Mengniu, Qatar Airways, and Quaker will feature across both the youth programme and the players’ tunnel, blending sponsor integrations with the ceremony’s broader storytelling. The official soundtrack draws from the FIFA World Cup 2026 album, threading music through the entire experience.

Tickets and hospitality packages for the tournament remain available at FIFA.com/tickets.
