El Clásico moves to the courtroom: Barcelona takes Legal action against Florentino Pérez over slanderous claims

By Temi Kings

The fierce rivalry between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid has officially moved from the pitch to the courtroom. On Friday, June 12, 2026, FC Barcelona announced the initiation of legal proceedings against Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez. The dispute centres around explosive remarks made by Pérez concerning the ongoing Negreira refereeing scandal.

The club’s official statement read:

FC Barcelona informs that, on this day, the mandatory conciliation claim prior to the filing of a criminal complaint for an offence of slander under Article 205 of the Penal Code has been submitted against the President of Real Madrid, Mr. Florentino Pérez, as a result of the statements made by him at the press conference held on 12 May and in an interview with a media outlet the following day.”

The root of the dispute

The legal action stems from a press conference on May 12, 2026, and a subsequent media interview where Pérez allegedly claimed that Barcelona had “stolen” domestic titles from Real Madrid with the help of referees. He directly pointed to the Negreira case, an investigation into payments made by Barcelona to José María Enríquez Negreira, the former vice president of the refereeing committee. In previous statements, Pérez had doubled down on his criticism, confidently stating, “Barça would do well to sue me”.

Barcelona’s leadership has made it clear that they will not tolerate these accusations. The club is demanding a full public retraction from the Real Madrid chief, stating his comments were made with knowledge of their falsity.

As detailed in their official release:

“The purpose of this claim is for Mr. Pérez to retract certain statements that he made with knowledge of their falsity and which are slanderous and offensive to the image and reputation of the Club.”

What happens next?

While fans are traditionally accustomed to reading about player names, goal scorers, and dramatic game events when these two clubs clash, this latest chapter of El Clásico is entirely focused on executive disputes and legal manoeuvring. Because this is strictly an off-pitch legal matter, no players were directly involved in the inciting incidents.

If Pérez refuses to retract his statements and the conciliation demand is not properly addressed, FC Barcelona has explicitly stated they will proceed with presenting the corresponding criminal complaint.

The ball is now firmly in Florentino Pérez’s court. Whether he chooses to walk back his comments or face Barcelona in a high-profile legal battle will be the defining story of the La Liga summer.
