Nobody wants to play” — Thomas Tuchel slams World Cup third-place play-off clash with France

The physical and emotional toll of a World Cup campaign is heavy enough, but being forced to play for a bronze medal in a match that represents the ultimate consolation prize is a bridge too far for England boss Thomas Tuchel. Following the Three Lions’ heartbreaking, late 2-1 semifinal defeat to Argentina in Atlanta, Tuchel did not hold back during his media obligations. Addressing the media pack ahead of Saturday’s third-place playoff in Miami, the German tactician gave a brutally honest assessment of the upcoming fixture against France.

“None of our players and none of the French players want to play this match,” Tuchel told reporters, perfectly capturing the somber mood in both camps. “They want to play the final. We gave everything to achieve that. Everyone plays to win the World Cup, but that’s how it is. We have a day less than France to recover, but we will do it professionally. The thing for us is to bounce back and react. That’s what you have to do at the highest level of sport, and that we will do”.

Tuchel’s blunt remarks highlight a long-standing debate within international football regarding the necessity of the third-place play-off. For elite, highly ambitious competitors, settling for a bronze-medal match can be an incredibly tough pill to swallow. Both teams were on the absolute cusp of the final—with England surrendering a 1-0 lead to Argentina in the final minutes, and France falling to Spain’s historic defense—meaning Saturday’s clash at Hard Rock Stadium is shrouded in disappointment.

Despite his obvious frustration with the scheduling, Tuchel was quick to defend England’s journey as a massive achievement. The manager, who recently penned a contract extension to lead the Three Lions through to Euro 2028, urged the public to put their run into perspective. “Reaching the semi-finals is already an achievement in itself, of course. Many great footballing nations are eliminated before the semi-finals. It is an achievement, but nobody wants to hear that at the moment, myself included, because we are very demanding of ourselves because we are so competitive”.

While Tuchel plans to rotate his squad to give fringe players opportunities, the match still holds significant individual and national subplots. For France, the fixture represents the official end of Didier Deschamps’ historic 14-year reign before Zinedine Zidane takes the reins, adding an emotional layer to Les Bleus’ preparation. On the other side, English captain Harry Kane expressed a deep desire to end their American tour on a winning note, stating that while holding on against Argentina wasn’t enough, bouncing back remains the priority. Both nations will seek a professional performance, but Tuchel’s candid words have ensured the spotlight remains firmly on the emotional exhaustion of elite sport.
