Spanish football introduces major refereeing rule changes for 2026/27 season to eliminating time-wasting and expand VAR scope

Spanish football authorities have officially introduced a comprehensive raft of new refereeing rules for the upcoming 2026/27 season, aimed directly at eliminating deliberate time-wasting, speeding up match flow, and expanding the technological capabilities of Video Assistant Referees (VAR). Approved by Spain’s Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) in compliance with the latest International Football Association Board (IFAB) directives, the updated guidelines apply across La Liga, Segunda División, and domestic cup competitions. The sweeping changes follow successful trials at the 2026 World Cup and mark one of the most aggressive officiating overhauls in modern European football.

At the center of the new regulations is a strict 10-second deadline for substituted players to exit the field of play. The countdown begins immediately when the fourth official raises the electronic substitution board or when the main referee signals for the change. If an outgoing player fails to clear the touchline within the allotted 10 seconds—without a valid safety or medical excuse—they risk receiving a yellow card, and their replacement will not be permitted to enter the match immediately. Instead, the incoming substitute must wait on the sidelines for a full minute of active playing time to elapse, only entering at the subsequent stoppage of play. When managers execute multiple substitutions simultaneously, every departing player must clear the pitch within 10 seconds of the final change being indicated.

The CTA has also instituted stringent timed penalties to eliminate tactical delay tactics disguised as player injuries. Outfield players who receive medical attention on the pitch will now be required to stay off the field for at least one full minute after play restarts, preventing teams from faking injuries to disrupt an opponent’s momentum. To curb simulated goalkeeper injuries—frequently utilized as covert timeouts for managers to relay tactical instructions—an innovative trial is being introduced. If play is halted for goalkeeper treatment, the head coach must instantly nominate an outfield player to leave the field for one minute once play resumes. If the manager fails to select an outfield player within 10 seconds of medical personnel entering the pitch, the team captain is automatically compelled to step off the field for the one-minute duration.

Beyond time-management enforcement, the 2026/27 update significantly expands the authority of VAR while altering how officials handle technical restart violations. Video officials are now empowered to intervene in cases of mistaken identity, off-the-ball aggressive conduct, and erroneous second yellow cards that lead to a red card dismissal. Referees have also been granted the discretion to apply the advantage principle on incorrectly taken restarts, such as moving free kicks or foul throw-ins, if the non-offending team immediately gains a clear operational benefit. Additionally, strict countdowns will be enforced on restarts, where excessive delays in taking a throw-in can result in turning possession over to the opponent, and stalling on a goal kick can lead directly to awarding a corner kick.
