The governance crisis at FIFA has intensified as President Gianni Infantino faces an unprecedented political revolt, allegations of backroom coercion, and explicit calls for his immediate resignation. Following the collapse of his proposal to sell a 20 percent commercial stake in future World Cups through a private entity, Infantino’s administration is fighting a battle across multiple fronts as member associations and prominent figures in world football publicly withdraw their support.
The scandal deepened significantly after Jordan Football Association President Prince Ali bin Hussein publicly accused FIFA leadership of coercion and blackmail. Prince Ali revealed that during the World Cup in North America, representatives from FIFA implied that extending political support for Infantino’s re-election campaign would help resolve longstanding administrative issues facing the Jordanian federation. Among these grievances, Jordan reported that FIFA has withheld $4.2 million in prize money owed for reaching the 2025 FIFA Arab Cup final, while Jordanian supporters faced severe visa obstacles and the national team absorbed unexpected U.S. tax burdens. Prince Ali forcefully rejected the pressure, stating that Jordan would not compromise its ethical values or endorse Infantino under coercive terms.
Concurrently, reports indicate that Infantino has engaged in political bartering in an attempt to shore up his dwindling base of support. During emergency meetings in Rabat, the FIFA president reportedly offered the Royal Moroccan Football Federation the right to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup Final at the newly planned 115,000-seat Hassan II Stadium in Casablanca. The hosting rights for the showpiece match, traditionally expected to be awarded to Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu, were allegedly offered on the strict condition that Morocco issue a formal public endorsement backing Infantino’s mandate amid mounting international criticism.
The unrest reached a boiling point when Portuguese football legend and former FIFA presidential candidate Luís Figo released a blistering public statement demanding Infantino’s immediate resignation. Figo accused the FIFA president of lying, deceiving stakeholders, and attempting to enrich himself at the expense of global football governance.
