The Premier League has revealed a unique transfer window schedule this summer, featuring two separate windows to allow Manchester City and Chelsea to sign players before the Club World Cup.
The first window will open on June 1 and close on June 10, followed by a five-day break. The second window will then run from June 16 to September 1.
This revised schedule is designed to align with the rest of Europe’s top leagues, which typically close their summer transfer windows at the end of August.
The change is necessary due to the expanded Fifa Club World Cup, which will feature 32 teams, including Manchester City and Chelsea.
The tournament will take place in the United States from June 15, and Fifa has allowed participating clubs to register new players from June 1-10 and again from June 27-July 3 for the knockout stage.
However, this revised transfer window schedule raises several concerns. The dates coincide with the Champions League final, Nations League semi-finals and finals, and World Cup qualifying matches, which could lead to players negotiating transfers during critical matches.
Additionally, international players who may move to clubs competing in the Club World Cup face uncertainty.
For instance, players like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kevin de Bruyne, who are out of contract on June 30, may need to navigate complex transfer scenarios to participate in the tournament.
Fifa has also introduced new registration rules, allowing clubs to sign players solely for the duration of the tournament. However, it is unlikely that Manchester City or Chelsea would explore this option.
