Draper advances to Madrid Open last 16 after Berrettini retirement amid power outage disruption

Jack Draper progressed to the round of 16 at the Madrid Open after Matteo Berrettini retired with an abdominal injury following a nationwide power outage that had halted play.

Monday’s matches in Madrid were suspended when the electronic line-calling system and scoreboards failed due to the blackout.

Power was restored by Tuesday morning, allowing fifth seed Draper to resume his match against 30th-ranked Berrettini.

Draper edged a tightly contested first set 7-6 (7-3) in 57 minutes, converting his third set point. But before the second set could begin, Berrettini withdrew after a conversation with Draper, citing abdominal discomfort.

“He said his abs were pulling,” Draper explained. “Credit to him for coming out and competing in that first set.

He’s always a positive player, and it’s tough to see a friend struggling with injuries again.”

Draper will now face American Tommy Paul in the next round.

Elsewhere, Grigor Dimitrov finally clinched victory over Jacob Fearnley, more than a day after his first match point. Their match had been suspended Monday with Dimitrov leading 6-4 5-4.

When play resumed Tuesday, Fearnley fought off a second match point before Dimitrov secured a 6-4 7-6 (7-3) win by dominating the tie-break.

Dimitrov moves on to face Canadian Gabriel Diallo, who upset Britain’s Cameron Norrie 2-6 6-4 6-4. Diallo had entered the main draw as a lucky loser.

In the women’s draw, defending champion Iga Swiatek extended her unbeaten run in Madrid to nine matches, overcoming a shaky performance to defeat Russia’s Diana Shnaider 6-0 6-7 (3-7) 6-4.

Swiatek, who made 50+ unforced errors but saved 11 of 13 break points, now faces Madison Keys—who previously beat her en route to the Australian Open title.

Top seeds Aryna Sabalenka and Daniil Medvedev are expected to play later on Tuesday.
