Gauff stuns Swiatek to reach Madrid Open final

Coco Gauff delivered a breathtaking performance to dismantle four-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek 6-1, 6-1 and book her place in the Madrid Open final.

The 21-year-old American had never beaten Swiatek on clay before, but needed just 64 minutes to record a statement win over the world number two. Gauff will now face world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the final, after the Belarusian defeated Elina Svitolina 6-3, 7-5 in the other semi-final.

Swiatek, the reigning Madrid champion, came into the match riding a nine-match winning streak at the tournament and had won 15 of her last 16 matches there. But she had no response to Gauff’s aggressive and composed display.

Gauff, the 2023 US Open champion, dominated behind her serve — firing seven aces and winning 19 of 21 points on her first serve. She kept the pressure high throughout, breaking Swiatek repeatedly and never allowing her rhythm to develop.

“I was aggressive and played with margin. Maybe it wasn’t her best level,” Gauff said in her post-match interview. “But I felt great on the court today — totally different from my first round here.”

Reflecting on her breakthrough, she added:

“I hadn’t beaten her on clay before. Obviously she’s a different player on this surface, but clay is also one of my strengths. I thought if I can beat her on hard, I can do it on clay too.”

With this win, Gauff not only reaches her first Madrid Open final but also sends a strong message ahead of the French Open — she’s ready to challenge the best, even on their favorite surface.
