Salah scores landmark 250th goal as Liverpool beat Aston Villa to end losing streak

Mohamed Salah netted his 250th goal for Liverpool as the reigning Premier League champions ended a four-match losing run with a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa at Anfield.

The Egyptian forward reached the milestone in first-half stoppage time, capitalising on a costly error from Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.

The Argentine’s poor clearance fell straight to Salah, who coolly slotted into the empty net for his landmark strike.

Midfielder Ryan Gravenberch, returning from an ankle injury that kept him out for three games, made sure of the points midway through the second half when his 20-yard effort took a deflection off Pau Torres, wrong-footing Martínez.

Salah’s goal saw him join Liverpool legends Ian Rush and Roger Hunt as only the third player in the club’s history to reach 250 goals in all competitions. Rush leads the all-time list with 346, while Hunt netted 285.

Aston Villa came close to scoring twice in the opening stages — Morgan Rogers’ curling strike struck the post after just five minutes, and Matty Cash’s deflected shot was brilliantly pushed onto the crossbar by Liverpool keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Liverpool’s win — their first in the league since beating Everton 2-1 on 20 September — lifted them to third in the Premier League table, seven points behind leaders Arsenal.
