UEFA Emergency Meeting: European federations push Nasser Al-Khelaifi to challenge Gianni Infantino for FIFA presidency

Tensions within global football governance have reached a boiling point as UEFA convenes an emergency meeting aimed at mounting a formidable challenge against FIFA President Gianni Infantino ahead of the upcoming election. Frustration among European football associations has intensified dramatically, driven by growing discontent over FIFA’s controversial commercial ventures, unilateral decision-making, and recent governance scandals. In response, key European federations are organizing a coordinated political campaign to ensure Infantino does not run unopposed for another term, signaling one of the most serious fractures between European leadership and FIFA’s executive branch in recent history.

At the center of these discussions is Paris Saint-Germain president and European Club Association (ECA) chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi, who has emerged as the primary figurehead backed by several prominent member associations, including Belgium and Poland. Proponents view Al-Khelaifi as a influential sports executive capable of bridging commercial clout with European club interests. However, Al-Khelaifi has repeatedly insisted that he holds “no ambition” to run for the highest office in world football, preferring to focus on his ongoing duties with PSG and the ECA. Despite his hesitation, rebel federations are continuing an aggressive push to persuade the Qatari executive to alter his stance before the candidacy deadline.

While Al-Khelaifi remains the preferred high-profile choice, European officials from nations such as Germany, Spain, Norway, Sweden, and Bosnia are simultaneously exploring backup candidates to unite under a single opposition platform. Legia Warsaw owner Dariusz Mioduski has been floated as an alternative candidate, alongside broader discussions regarding potential consensus figures from other confederations. As UEFA leaders attempt to solidify their strategy during today’s emergency summit, the outcome will dictate whether European football can present a unified front to reshape FIFA’s future leadership or if Infantino’s global coalition will hold firm.
